You can stay in HK for 30 days with out a visa at all. Can not do that in the mainland. However if you go to Shanghai first then go to HK and you don't have a multiple China visa you may have to get another China visa to get back into China so make sure you have a multiple entry visa

To answer your question. As some already suggested, yes, you can go to Hong Kong without a visa.I assume you are holding a US passport. You need to have a student visa for China, because you are studying there. You do not a visa visiting HK for 90 days. As long as your Student visa for China are valid upon your entry to China, you are OK. Or otherwise go to the China Embassy in HK and ask.The chinese student visa has no effect in Hong Kong, As a studnt, always check your validity of your passport, visa, and bring enough $$$ for your stay here and there. Thanks for asking. Have a good trip to Hong Kong.
