Can I change from a work to a student visa in China w/o leaving the country?
I am leaving my employment in Shanghai and wish to study in Beijing. I am an American, and I have heard that some people have to go to Hong Kong to get their visas changed, but would I potentially need to return to America to get a new visa? Thanks!

No, you don't need to go to Hong Kong to get your visa changed (especially you're applying for a student visa, that may not be the case for Z visa, though). You should contact a trustworthy agent to do the conversion and only the one you can trust. More new agents are now opening and they usually have "sudden price fluctuations" and "hidden costs", or even worse they may somehow lose your passport, no visa at all even after the due date of your visa. Terrible? Yes. But it happens A LOT. Contact me for more information, we frequently helped friends dealing with visa problems.
