Hong Kong University SAT score?
Hi, I'm thinking about applying to Hong Kong University for their medical program, and my SAT score's 1980, including writing. I don't do too much extracurricular activities, but of the few that I'm a part of, I'm very deeply involved. I'm in the National Art Honor Society as president, I've entered and won 1st in place for some art shows, I'm involved with the local art museum, and I do art volunteer work with NAHS. I'm also a member of the science club at school. My GPA's a 4.56, and my class rank is 7 out of 350-ish students. Stats on HKU: 1st in Hong Kong, 1st in Asia, 21st in the world. Requirements: SAT score: 1800 including writing, and minimum 2 SAT subject tests or AP credits. I'm also going to be applying as an International student from the US, but I do know Cantonese, and I was raised in HK. So how do my chances look for getting into HKU? How high of an SAT/ACT score should I aim for? I have yet to take my ACTs. I've already got the AP credit part covered.

You're chances are pretty high I'm guessing. The minimums for all colleges aren't what you should be getting; you should always aim for score higher than ones needed to be considered. Your SAT score will look really nice, and I think the AP part will also look good. Maybe try some SAT subject tests; they're easier than AP and they look nice as well. Even though HKU might not require you to take it now you have the AP, it still supports your application. I'm not too sure about ACT, but a little above average should be good enough. Oh, just to let you know, since you're taking the Med program, it's extremely competitive and you MUST be fluent in Cantonese. You might want to start speaking it more, because one of their admission's officers told our school that during the 1st year at HKU, you'll be doing some internship at some hospitals, and most people of Hong Kong speak Cantonese, not English or Mandarin, so be sure you know your Cantonese. Maybe try the SAT again. A score of 2000 or more always looks better (like sales people liking to say $99.9 instead of $100 - the first number makes it LOOK like a big difference), but that depends on you. Otherwise, I'd say your grades are great and your chances are really big =]

I am a 23-year-old closeted gay man. Should I study in Australia or stay in Hong Kong?
I am a 23-year-old closeted gay man. Should I study in Australia or stay in Hong Kong?
I am a 23-year-old closeted gay man. I am orginally from Hong Kong. I have been an accounting student in an Australian university for 2 years. Looking back these 2 years, I have been struggling with my own sexuality and my accounting course. It has been a torture for me. I've found I am not an accounting material. Now, my university ask me to discontinue my course and I go back to Hong Kong. I wanna do a new degree course majoring in Italian and Spanish in Australia.(I've self-studied both language for 3 years and really enjoy the experience. Also I've collected Italian and Spanish music for 2 years.Love it) My parents say they will support me whether I do it in Australia or HK.However, I've got a feeling that they prefer me to do it in HK.But they don't mind if I do it in Australia. However, my parents are homophobic. After being in denial for 2 year, I've come out to all my Australian friends who are all gay-friendly. But not my parents yet since I'm afraid they'll cut off my sponsor 1 day ago Additional Details 1 day ago I compared degree courses in Australia and Hong Kong, I prefer the Australian one. I have a lot more friends in Australia. I have no friends here in Hong Kong , except living with homophobic mum and dad. In order to have a good social life for a gay man, should I stay in HK or go to Australia ?

I would stay in Australia, it seems like your life would be a LOT better there.

Crikey, mate! Stay in the land down unda, study Italian and hook up with a hot lifeguard! Seriously, the time has come to take control of your life and do what's right for you. I'm 1/2 Japanese so I understand the whole "obligation to one's parents" thing but dude, you've got your OWN life. LIVE it! Ciao, Bello!
3 :
Whether your in Hong Kong or Australia you are still gonna be gay. It doesn't matter.
4 :
Sounds like you'll be happier in Australia to me. Try a pro/con list!
5 :
Go to Australia or San Francisco. Hong Kong may not be as liberal yet.

Do any expats in Hong Kong send their children to local schools?
Do any expats in Hong Kong send their children to local schools?
By "local schools", I mean English medium schools (public and private) that follow the local education system and prepare their students for the HKCEE and HKALE. By "local schools", I mean schools: 1. That are generally more high-pressured than international schools, 2. Where most pupils speak Hong Kong English rather than British/American English, 3. Where discipline and behaviour/dress codes are generally stricter than in international schools, 4. Where Chinese is a compulsory subject. Personally, I believe that if expatriate children have the ability to get into an elite local school like Diocesan Girl's School, and are willing to learn Chinese, the education they receive would be far more rigorous and superior to what they'd get at an international school. On the other hand, sending expatriate children to mediocre local schools would probably hurt their future prospects.

Yes, I had school mates who were Indians / Japanese / Korean and some of them took Chinese too, some of them took French and skipped Chinese. I studied in Catholic Anglo-Chinese school since kindegarden all the way up to Secondary,(not DGS though) and I do not speak Chinglish. Your comment regarding to "Hong Kong English" in your question can't apply to all local students in Hong Kong. By the way, DGS certainly is an elite school and definitely no girls there speaks Chingish! DBS (Diocesan Boy's School) is famous as well, do you know how hard to get into these school? There are quite a few local Anglo-Chinese schools are elite and really hard to get into + to overcome the pressure from school works and examinations are not easy to handle / relieve! I used to have a lot of home works and was forced to memorize new words each day from dictionary since I was 6!

Where can I rent a van that can take 10 passengers around Chicago?
Where can I rent a van that can take 10 passengers around Chicago?
I am planning a trip for 15 Hong Kong students to visit Chicago. We will stay in the suburbs, Arlington Heights, so I don't think hiring a bus is practical. I am hoping to rent 2 vans to accomodate them. Any ideas?
