hi, i think the more important issues at hand are the visa entries and time frame for that.... clarify with both sides. If i am not wrong, malaysians need visa to enter CHina (shenzhen leg). There is a question of the key focus of your visit there. social aspects? cultural? economic? There are travel agents who can help to tailor the trip and advise you on the management of time and places to visit. For HK, you can visit their tourist promotion official site. As for shenzhen, its basically their theme parks which are really nice. Alternatively, write to your counterparts in HK and Shenzhen, (they have depts which deal with foreign requests.) i suppose you are workign with them closely for the trip.... they will be able to let you know whether there is any time available outside the formal schedule to allocate time for some sightseeing.

Go to the Victoria Peak in Hong Kong. It has a great view.

Transportation in Hong Kong?

Transportation in Hong Kong?
I am an exchange student in Hong Kong, new to the area. My new host family is probably in Discovery Bay, Lantau Island. My school is in Stanley (south HK island.) If someone who is familiar with the HK transportation system could help answer me, thank you so much. It is tough being in a new country all alone. How would I get to school? What's the fastest way? I already know that they are far from each other.. >_< Thanks!

The fastest way is to take D Bay's ferry to Central and from there, take the No. 6 bus from the bus terminal which will take you all the way to Stanley. D Bay's ferry offers a monthly pass which is cheaper than buying the fare twice daily. If you can catch both the ferry and the bus in time, it should take you around an hour to get to your school. The No 6 bus ride has one of the best views in HK, riding pass the most luxurious houses and apartments including the residences of the US Consul-General in HK and the richest Chinese on earth, Mr Li Ka Shing. D Bay is a very unique residential area spread across a S W portion of the Lantau Island, the biggest island of the 200+ islands in HK. D Bay is owned by a private developer who literally build up the entire area from barren. It has its own reservoir, golf course, club house and shopping centre, restaurants and a private beach. Cars from the city cannot enter into the area which makes it very private and exclusive. Check www.DiscoverHongKong.com and enjoy your stay!

Any ideas for an extra-curricular acitivity class? They are primary students in Hong Kong?
We are to meet on every friday for 1.5 hours to do some activities in English. I can choose the level grades that I would like to recruit for the class. The main problem is that the students' english level is too poor to understand complicated instructions in English. Also they are not suitable to do any exciting activities as they are too hyper and too hard to control.... please help..

Well, maybe you can try to talk to them slowly and use more sign/ body language. Hong Kong students should be rather friendly, I believe. Since it is pretty hard for them to get to school and the school fees are rather expensive, they will surely try to be good. Maybe you can use Mahjong or something like that that has something to do in their daily lives for them to learn the shapes and numbers of that particular tile. You can also make English classes more interesting with the help off softwares. You can too let them listen to nice English songs and explain it to them slowly. This applies to English movies too. Just make sure the movies funny. Be confident and don't lose hope.

Apart from the power plug and possibly the online play, I don't see why it wouldn't work. Although i'm not sure whether the Hong Kong Tv's read on a different frequency. PAL, PAL-B/G, NTSC etc. to the US tv's. That may or may not affect the xbox though

Since 1997 you have to apply to the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Washington DC. They probably have consulates in other big cities in the US, like Chicago, Los Angeles or New York. You can check for this information on the internet.
2 :
Residents of most countries can enter Hong Kong without applying for a visa in advance and are allowed to stay for 90 days. A visa will be issued on arrival. All the visa-free countries are listed below. http://www.chinatravel.com/facts/china-visa/hong-kong-visa.htm
3 :
The Hong Kong Government maintains three Economic and Trade Offices in the United States. Addresses and telephone numbers for these offices are listed below: 1520 18th Street NW Washington, DC 20036 Tel: (202)331-8947 680 Fifth Avenue, 22 F New York, NY 10019 Tel: (212)751-4659 222 Kearny St., Suite 402 San Francisco, CA 94108 Tel: (415)397-2215 You might want to give one of these offices a call and ask them. They probably have more information that we do! Good luck!
4 :
Citizens of Vietnam need a visa to travel to Hong Kong as tourists. You may apply for the visa either in person or through a travel agent at the Chinese Embassy in Washington or the Consulate Generals at Chicago, Houston, New York, Los Angeles or San Francisco, depending on the U.S. state you are living in. Source(s): http://www.immd.gov.hk/ehtml/hkvisas_4.htm http://us.china-embassy.org/eng/hzqz/xgqz/t84250.htm http://www.china-embassy.org/eng/hzqz/t84229.htm http://us.china-embassy.org/eng/hzqz/xgqz/t84250.htm
5 :
Contact the Chinese Consulate right here in the United States. There one right here in Los Angeles, CA . They are located on Shatto Place. I'm sure that there are many others throughout the US. You can also speak with the travel agent. Make sure that you ask for the 60-90 day one and not the 30 day Good Luck.

I am also like you, Chinese but cannot read/write much Chinese. It took me quite a few months of sending out many CVs each day and only getting a few replies. Most of the interviews i had been invited requires Chinese typing. Anyway... in Hong Kong there are so many large companies that are English based and don't need much Chinese, perhaps just speaking/listening. My suggestion is to look at these two job searching websites that are reliable and mainly for English speaking people. Spend sometime on it and play around with it. I am sure it won't be that hard. www.jobsdb.com/hongkong www.classifiedpost.com Although Classified Post aren't going to be much for fresh grads as its more for senior positions. Good luck!

Which is better for students, Japan (Kyoto) or Hong Kong?

Which is better for students, Japan (Kyoto) or Hong Kong?
In 2011 I have the option of going to either Japan or Hong Kong for a year, as part of my course at University. I'm currently enrolled for the year in Hong Kong (Uni of Hong Kong), but am considering asking to change to the year in Japan (Kyoto University) for a year. Which is a better place for a student to live for a year? Quite into anime and can speak some Japanese, but also into Chinese culture (minus the communism) and can speak some Mandarin (I know - Hong Kong and Cantonese). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Wow, what a difficult question. It really depends on what you consider "better for a student" as these cities and cultures are very different from each other. What are your goals as a student? Are you simply looking for an international experience or do you intend to study the language? In Kyoto, you can obviously study Japanese, but in Hong Kong, you could study Mandarin, Cantonese, AND Japanese. You don't say where you are from but I assume you are a native English speaker, how much Japanese do you speak? Can you manage if most people outside your university do not speak English? In Hong Kong, pretty much everyone speaks English. This is not the case in Kyoto where the language is primarily Japanese although most signs at railway stations and tourist areas are in Japanese and English. In Kyoto many young people study English and are eager to practice their English skills with Westerners, but it is far different from Hong Kong where most people are fluent in English. Something to think about. Japan is the center of the universe when it comes to Anime, you can find it in Hong Kong as well but nothing like Japan. Hong Kong is the financial center of Asia. What are you studying at University, have you chosen a major yet? If you are a finance major, Hong Kong may be better for setting up future career options. If you are interested in art or history perhaps Kyoto is a better choice. It's hard to answer your question because so much depends on what you like. Do you have any possibility of visiting these two cities before making a decision? That would be the best advice I could give, because only you can know what feels right.

What is the average annual salary (in US Dollars) an English language teacher makes in Hong Kong?

What is the average annual salary (in US Dollars) an English language teacher makes in Hong Kong?
I am a college student now, and I am fascinated with Hong Kong, I even have a friend who is from Hong Kong! I was pondering what I wanted to do for the rest of my life and just yesterday I figured out what I wanted to do! I want to teach Hong Kongers how to read, write, listen, and speak English! Now, it is not the amount of money that I am concerned about, I just would like to live a happy financially secure life so that I could live in Hong Kong and also have enough money to fly back home to the USA to see my family. Also, I was wondering if there are any courses in Cantonese near the Galveston, Texas area, since that is where I am going to college now? Thank you for your answers, I look forward to reading all of them!

Plenty of people teach English in Hong Kong and make enough to live on plus enough to fly home once a year. Naturally, the better qualified you are, the more money you will make. Instead of spending your time trying to learn Cantonese (a task much better undertaken in Hong Kong), you should concentrate on learning to teach ESL. You are unlikely to be able to speak Cantonese well enough to teach in the language for several years and there are plenty of Chinese who can do that. Your most marketable talent is your native speaking ability - something that cannot be replicated by a non-native speaker. Add this to some genuine qualifications in TEFL/TESL and you are good to go. Check out the numerous TESL sites online and get yourself qualified. Then offer your services at a discount rate to the local Chinese community. Actually teaching will give you a whole range of insights (and questions) that talking about it will never do. Hong Kong is an amazing city - you should visit no matter what you decide to do. Check out these links: http://www.utexas.edu/student/esl/training.pdf http://www.esl-guide.com/dir/texas/more2.html
3 :
I'm currently teaching at a university in Hong Kong as an instructor, and I make around $3400 U.S. a month. However, I know some primary teachers who teach in the NET program and they earn around twice as much as that! Salaries are very good here. I don't know about learning Cantonese in Galveston. You might look for a private tutor, or buy some language learning books and CDs. For more information about teaching English in Hong Kong, try the websites below:
4 :
The first thing you will need to do is get a TEFL Certificate. Most (if not all) schools in China will require a BA and a TEFL Certificate. I did a 4 week program in Prague that totally rocked and really prepared me for teaching abroad. I have been teaching in Prague for a year now and I couldn't be happier. Check out http://www.teflworldwideprague.com/ for more details. just make sure you don't get certified on line. It won't be recognized by any school worth being employed by. As for the money in Hong Kong, it is one of the best places to go if you want to save money. (I would try not to think of it in USD. You won't be making USD, and the cost of living there is different than in the US. You will want to compare your salary to the cost of living in Hong Kong. That will really give you a better idea of what you will have to work with.) Many teachers head over to Asia to pay off student loans or credit cards. A degree and a TEFL certificate is required if you want to teach in the following countries: Japan, Taiwan, South Korea. Those are the countries where you'll live earn a good salary. I knew a couple that taught in Japan for 2 years and saved $30,000. Typical salaries in Japan are about $2300/month but the cost of living is higher than the others mentioned. You'll still save a lot. In Taiwan you can earn about $1700/month and in South Korea and Hong Kong about $2200/month. Hope this helps, and GOOD LUCK! It is a super fun career choice!

5 :
Its safe for everyone !! don't worry !!
6 :
Whatever damage that was done had already passed. Life goes on and people will move on. Undoubtedly, there are many local Hong Kong citizens not pleased with the event but chose not to make the same mistake by taking out the revenge on Filipinos or anyone in particular. It will be a thing of the past. You and your fellow students are safe, there are still many Filipinos living in Hong Kong and they can attest to it.
7 :
Hong Kong always been safe to Filipinos and visitors from all around the world. The people there are very friendly, kind-hearted and sensible, always willing to give a helping hand. The hostage killing incident was horrible but Hong Kong people have moved on quickly with their lifes when so many new events going on around them each day. I heard that Singaporeans are extremely racist towards people from poorer countries. Their diplomats openly called India "stupid". Racists signs are posted everywhere in Singapore vs Mainland Chinese. At least you never find these sort of things happen in Hong Kong. Dont worry, check www.DiscoverHongKong.com and enjoy!

I am wodering as far as rooming goes, we can either put her in my room or in the guest room. NOrmally an easy answer, the guest room. But it is in out basement. So while my family sleeps upstairs she would be two floors down. New place new coutry. Should i just let her use my room or would it be fine. The only other option is my brothers room, but her stills seeps with my parents so it would be a racecar bed so that wouldnt work. Second as far as gifts, we will get her a sweatshirt with our states name on it but what else should i get her? They are very gift givey there, my teacher says when i go with him and some other student i will need another suitcase for it all, like everyone that goes usually needs. So as far as gifts for her what would she want. I know she liikes chocolate, reading, ice skating, cartoons, and is learning mandarin. lastly what do i expect? Any tips?

Good for you in meeting a new Hong Kong friend and going to Hong Kong soon. You're a very considerate person, I agree it's not very good to put her alone in the basement, if you do not mind letting her stay in your room will enable both of you understand each other's culture better. You're going to have lots of questions about Hong Kong before your trip in April. Getting her T-shirt is a great idea. Chocolates and souvenirs like key chain or mug with your city will be easy to carry and like by all teens. Check www.DiscoverHongKong.com and enjoy!

As hitman for hire, how come Hong Kong become 2 students are hired by 60k to rob a gold jewerly store ?
This is a new story that two Hong Kong high school students are hired by thirty thousand Hong Kong dollars each. They robbed a local gold jewerly store and the owner lost 1.2 million dollars of jewerly in a few minutes. This case reflecting Hong Kong is an evil city where bad people not only to make the staggering inflation by real estate and stock shares transaction. And they hire the young students to comit a crime for earning money easier than transcations as noted.

Can I enter and leave Hong Kong & China with two different passports?

Can I enter and leave Hong Kong & China with two different passports?
I am a dual citizen of USA and Australia. I am currently in Hong Kong on a student visa with my US passport. I was wondering if I can exit Hong Kong (using my US, of course), and then enter China with my Australian passport. Then when I return, I would exit China on my Australian, and then reenter Hong Kong on my US passport. Is this situation possible at all?

Even though China and Hong Kong are part of the same country, they currently have different administrative procedures. Yes, you can enter/exit Hong Kong on one passport and enter/exit China on another. The border stations are not linked to each other to determine who is doing what under what passport. EDIT: Special note to Shimmy . . . because a visa for a United States citizen is significantly more expensive than visas for citizens from other countries, it is not uncommon at all for those with recognized dual citizenship to use different passports for different travel purposes. It's one of the benefits of having dual citizenship. There is nothing illegal, immoral or even evasive about the process.
3 :
Of course, yes. Good idea. Use your multiple passports to evade authorities in China. The Chinese police will never catch you because you are so smart. I respect your bravery.
4 :

Can I go to Hong Kong from Guangzhou and back with just a Chinese Student Visa?

Can I go to Hong Kong from Guangzhou and back with just a Chinese Student Visa?
I heard from someone that if I leave Guangzhou to get to HK, I can't go back to Guangzhou cuz "once you leave mainland for HK, your visa automatically expires". Is this true??
China - 3 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
There are really two questions here: what travel document is required for you to enter HK and what is needed to return to China. 1) HK allows citizens from many countries to visit for up to 90 days by merely presenting their valid passport. 2) China requires a valid Chinese visa affixed to a valid passport for entry. Student visas are issued for the sole purpose of study, not travel. Most student visas are either zero or single entry, depending upon whether they were issued inside or outside of China. Without a valid re-entry available on your visa, you may not re-enter China with that document.
2 :
Yes, it's true. Unless you have a residence permit or a multi entry visa, you cannot re-enter mainland China without getting a new visa.
3 :
Hong Kong and the Mainland are under 2 totally different sets of immigration rules, under the 1-country-2-systems. Please check your Mainland visa whether it allows multiple entry or not. If not, you're only admitted into the Mainland once, right after you depart, you're unable to re-enter.

Are there any schools in Hong Kong that teach in Mandarin?

Are there any schools in Hong Kong that teach in Mandarin?
I decided I wanted to become a foreign exchange student to Hong Kong, and I am learning Mandarin. Then I read somewhere that in schools, they teach in Cantonese. I will be a junior in high school. Are there any schools that teach in Mandarin?

I lived there for 25 years and taught in local and international schools. Most local schools do not accept foreign exchange students. They are overcrowded and teach mostly in Cantonese, which is the southern Chinese dialect. Contact the Chinese International School. I dont know if they take foreign exchange students, but they might be open to the idea. They do an IB diploma and all students are required to take Mandarin. Otherwise, you might check out programs in Shanghai or Beijing.

foreign student cost of living in hong kong?

foreign student cost of living in hong kong?
I'm planning to study in Hong Kong for one semester, but I want to know what is the average cost of living (monthly) of living in Hong Kong. That should include rent, electricity and services, food, etc. Anyone that has been studying in HK as exchange student, please tell me how much did you spent per month...??
China - 2 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
On the average it shouild cost you HK $ 3500-4500 per month, thats the barest minimum living cost including rent, electricity and services, food.
2 :
The living cost here is quite high, I would say the minimum would be HK$8,000.00 to play safe for if you're sick and needed to have some medical treatment (around HK$300 for each private doctor consultation)! Average rent for a short term studio about 120 sq ft to 300 sqft in city near MTR stations or in New Territories would be from HK$4,000 up (includes management fee), if you decided to live in New Territories then you have to allow an extra HK$500 to 600 for transportation fee. Average transportation fee for student (half price) would be around HK$500 each month depends on the distance between your home and school or your activities rings. Electricity, food, mobile phone, gas,... etc would cost you at least HK$3,000 (say HK$100 each day, say HK$70 for 3 meals (home cooking for dinners and weekends), electricity bill - HK$300 per month, mobile phone HK$180 per month + other daily expenses - shower gel, shampoo, soap, etc.) If you want to have some social activities, you need at least HK$10,000.00 for each month to have dinners with friends once a week or go clubbing .. having coffee in Starbucks...etc. (a tall cup of coffee is about HK$25.00, I forget, a small cup of Haagen-Daz ice-cream is HK$29.50, Madonald's happy meal is around HK$21.00)

Where can I access information on the lifestyle of an international student in Hong Kong, average costs etc???
I am considering studying in Hong Kong and am looking to find some information regarding the cost of living. Having found that some unis there offer very reasonably priced accommodation, I was wondering whether it is a good choice to make or whether other costs will see me living in my own filth.

University accommodation in Hong Kong's very decent. Comfortable, and you'd also get to make friends with other students. I have friends who are currently studying at the Chinese University and Hong Kong University, and they both love living in the university halls. Uni accommodation in Hong Kong's very convenient too, unlike some in, for example, London, where they make you live in the sticks and travelling to school takes an hour. Most should be within walking distance to campus, and are close to public transport too. About private accommodation, renting's relatively expensive in Hong Kong, so unless you find a flatshare (which are a little difficult to find), or you live really far from the city, you'd be much better off living on campus, as you'd be saving money on rent/transport/food. Regarding costs for uni accommodation, some halls are all inclusive, bills-wise, but some might require you to put in a dollar or something every day for the aircon etc. It'd still be cheaper than if you rent outside though! Hope this helps.

Should I move to Hong Kong as a college student with a strong desire to become a resident one day?

Should I move to Hong Kong as a college student with a strong desire to become a resident one day?
I am currently a 21 year old college business-finance major in the US...and I have a strong desire to move out to another country. I realize this is very hard to do, but since I am so young...I feel this is only one of the few times I could be able to something like this. If I happen to like Hong Kong...I may stay...if not that is fine too. I am just wondering if I should go ahead with this dream and continue my studies abroad in Hong Kong because I have done some extensive research and I have just fell in love with the place.

As far as I know, you can only get residency by getting married with a HK resident if you were not born in HK. You can get a visa to study but then you need a working visa when you start working. If you have enough money, you can start a business here by yourself. Good Luck.
2 :
why not, its a fun place, close to alot of other nice places, you have to live there for 7 years to get permanent residency. lots of business there, you should be able to make lots of connections.
3 :
linerak was wrong... If you wanna get citizenship there, you just have to live in Hong Kong for 7 consecutive years. You can still travel and go back to US, but I dont know how long you can be out of Hong Kong... Hong Kong is a very good place for you since you major in business-finance... And you speak English... You wont have to worry about getting a job... There's A LOT of international companies there. Most importantly, good food is everywhere. Univ of Science and Technology is a great U.
4 :
It's a great place, but don't initially plan to stay forever. Many, many expatriates get tired of HK after two or three years; the constant pace, the pollution and crowds... they take their toll. On the other hand, you may - like me - decide that you're happy for the long haul, and that's great too. Immigration paperwork isn't so hard; you need to find a job - lots of overseas companies will be looking for foreigners, so that's not wildly difficult. You will get a one-year work visa the first time you apply (it's quick and easy), and then after that you will get two-year visas. After seven years you will be able to apply to become a permanent resident (which is not the same as citizenship; you'll still be a US citizen, but you'll have permanent rights to live and work in HK, which will lapse if you spend more than three years away from HK). The bottom line is, it's a fantastic city, and many, many expatriates are very happy here. Give it a try!

could i go to japan if i'm studying in Hong Kong with student visa?
do i need to apply for a tourist visa to go to japan? or my us passport will just do...this is only for maybe one week...thanks a bunch!

Uk Citizens will receive a 90 day tourist visa automatically upon arrival at any Japanese port with a valid passport. That's the only one I know for sure, if you are any other nationality, it's best to check. I think it will be the same for Americans, Australians and New Zealanders, but I'm not as certain... Robyn has a point, by the way... you are in Hong Kong on a student visa, that will probably be anulled once you leave unless you get a re-entry permit. Again, check check check! Well, the fastest way must be to go the school office at your place of study, at least over the student visa bit.
2 :
As a US passport holder you'd only have trouble getting into Japan for a week if they decided to check why a minor has no adults supervising her. If you're actually a minor of course. Suitable letters from parents giving permission would normally suffice. I don't know about Hong Kong though. Can you up and leave the country when you have a student visa, or would it be useless afterwards? That's what you need to check now.
3 :
If you're 18 or older, it won't be a problem. Under 18 might be a problem though. All you need to visit Japan is a passport and a round trip ticket. They'll ask you why you are there when you arrive, and then stamp your passport as such.I spent time in Hong Kong.Japan is a lot different.

Can I apply for a student visa to the USA in Hong Kong but I'm an Australian?

Can I apply for a student visa to the USA in Hong Kong but I'm an Australian?
I have an Australian passport but I am staying in Hong Kong in August till September, can I apply for a student visa over there? Would the US consulate in HK still issue visas to citizens of countries that are "different" from the country that their consulate is situated in? Also, since I'm born in Hong Kong but I have immigrated to Australia, is my Australian passport enough evidence to prove that I'm an Australian?
Immigration - 1 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Generally you can apply for a visa at an US embassy not in your home country if you are a resident of that country (I would think legally staying more than 6 months out of a year in that country would make you a resident of that country). If you are just visiting Hong Kong for 2 months you are not a resident of Hong Kong and if you generally live in Australia you would have to apply in Australia. But given that it usually take a few months to get an appointment at the embassy you can phone the US embassy which is responsible for you based on your home town in Australia to set up an appointment. In order to get a student visa you also need to be accepted by an US university and show that you have sufficient funds for at least a year for paying tuition fees and living expenses. Generally that should be about $50 000. An Australian passport is sufficient evidence of Australian citizenship. If you currently haven't yet been accepted at an US university you are not going to start studying this fall. Depending on the university fall semester will start in August or September, so even if you have been accepted you would have left it rather late to start to organize getting a student visa.

You can stay in HK for 30 days with out a visa at all. Can not do that in the mainland. However if you go to Shanghai first then go to HK and you don't have a multiple China visa you may have to get another China visa to get back into China so make sure you have a multiple entry visa
2 :
To answer your question. As some already suggested, yes, you can go to Hong Kong without a visa.I assume you are holding a US passport. You need to have a student visa for China, because you are studying there. You do not a visa visiting HK for 90 days. As long as your Student visa for China are valid upon your entry to China, you are OK. Or otherwise go to the China Embassy in HK and ask.The chinese student visa has no effect in Hong Kong, As a studnt, always check your validity of your passport, visa, and bring enough $$$ for your stay here and there. Thanks for asking. Have a good trip to Hong Kong.

just cross it from shenzhen or u can take the long way of going to macau and take an hr ferry to hk no visa needed for hk if u already have one for china.
2 :
Shenzhen Luohu or shenzhen train station on the second floor there is direct gate for Chinese and foreigners who want to go to Hongkong. Fill out some forms which customs office needed then pass the customs entry gate buy a subway ticket at the service window (of course there are many stops you have to choose one) then you will be in Hongkong in no time. But one thing you do need to remember is does your students visa a multiple entry visa? If not you have to apply for another visa at Chinese embassy in Hongkong if you want to return mainland China. For more visa and job information you can check it from www.networkesl.com I hope this is helpful for you.
3 :
From Shenzhen you can literally walk to hong kong. Your Visa or work permit from China allows you to go back and forth freely - same with Macau. Close by toShenzhens main rail station (Not Shenzhen west) is the border crossing - just walk up, fill out a couple of little slips, present your passport and you are thru. Now you are in the railway station - here you can change money or simply use your ATM card to withdraw HKD - you can catch a train straight to Mong Kok or Kowloon or wherever you like - it takes about 30 minutes.
4 :
Nepalese passport holders require a visa to enter Hong Kong, you cannot get one on arrival.Secondly you must have a multiple entry visa for China so that you can return to your university in China after visiting Hong Kong.

you didnt give us enough info to anser the Q. If you stay in kowloon at the mirador mansions it'll be about $20/night single, cheaper for doubles. Thats the cheapest possible in hk and the rooms arent great, but decent i guess. food is about 40-60HK$ average if you dont go to nice places like soho (except los tacos in soho, cheap and DELICIOUS mexican food! 15-20HK$/taco) Most foreign food is expensive. Noodles are cheap. Shopping is not cheap but i dont know much about buying fabrics, etc if you can take the bus from the airport (A21 I think) its only 33HK$ as opposed to the subway which costs WAY more. If you pay per trip its like 4HK$ for one stop on the subway, like 10 for two stops, though it might vary. From Kowloon to Lantau it was only 17 so i doubt it gets much more expensive than that. The deal the guy above mentioned might be good. I easily spent 500HK$ in one day with hotel, food, shopping, etc One more thing, always remember to bargain! start with at least 30% off any price they give

Anyone remember the name of this kung-fu movie with Bruce Lee lookalike?

Anyone remember the name of this kung-fu movie with Bruce Lee lookalike?
I saw it in late 80s-early 90s on VHS. Movie was more or less following standard hongkong kung-fu movie plot, except the main character was called Bruce Lee (but it definitely was not him, allthough the lookalike actor was very close match). Plot: A martial arts school of traditional Kung-fu style (where Bruce Lee is one of the teachers? - they call him "Bruce") in China is being bullied by nearby japanese karate school, with intent to get rid of competition. Of course lots of fighting happens, after which Bruce is the clear winner (thus his school prevails), and japanese school hires a master from japan that has some weird weapon, looking like a pair of cymbals, which he can use as shields and as throwing weapons as well. The japanese master assassinates Bruce's teacher - an old man leaving in the mountains (yet still pretty energetic for his age - he put up a major fight) and Bruce has a spectacular showdown with him after finishing beating the remaining japanese school students and teachers. Movie title might have had "Bruce Lee" in it (but since it was translated - I'm not sure - translated movie titles might be completely different from original) Possibly important is the detail I've remembered - that the japanese master-assassin was not dressed in Kimono outfit, but instead in a dark suit with a hat (very similar to what Oddjob was wearing in James Bond movie Goldfinger) No, its not "They Call me Bruce" or its sequel. But it did point me in the right direction to this page (about Bruce Lee clones): http://www.beijingvideo.com/clones.html

Are Filipinos really considered in US as Pacific Islanders and not Asians?

Are Filipinos really considered in US as Pacific Islanders and not Asians?
Don’t be fooled at once by the title of the entry. The story behind that statement excludes us. Last year, a friend left the Philippines and went to the United States. In his German class, the students were international. The professor asked who the Asians were and one by one the Asian students introduced themselves. And so it went, the Chinese, the Koreans, the Vietnamese, the Singaporeans etc. all raised their hands. Finally the professor calls this Filipino and asks, Professor: Where are you from? Filipino: Philippines Professor: Oh, Filipinos are not Asians! They are Pacific Islanders! Because ASIANS ARE SMART… In the United States, it is already being taught in schools that Filipinos are not Asians—that we are Pacific Islanders. While there is a lot of reaction against it, I am surprised that many intelligent Filipinos abroad have accepted this without question. Pacific Islands are places like Samoa, Hawaii, Tahiti, Guam, Cook Islands, Mariana Islands—and their common denominator? Most of them do not possess their own national and political identities—they are islands under the jurisdiction and protection of more powerful countries like USA, France and New Zealand. Most of these Pacific Islands are still referred to as “indigenous natives.” They have very, very small populations and they have no global role or power. While they have their own unique culture and characteristics, they do not hail from any great civilization in the past. Hindi sila lumaban at tumayo para sa sarili nilang lahi. What is even sad, however, is that even Pacific Islanders do not like and do not accept Filipinos! One good example are Hawaiian tourists we met in China. When they learned that we were Filipinos, they disgustingly uttered , “You eat Balot!” and avoided us like a plague. The statement of this American guy, filled with racism obviously merits strong disapproval. In fact, our friend was so angry after having been humiliated in front of the class. The logical thing to say, is that the Philippines IS part of the ASEAN group of nations. We can also say that Japan is an island in the Pacific Ocean but is not considered a Pacific Island. But we should ask—why would no one dare to call the Japanese people Pacific Islanders? Why pick on the Philippines? Simple. Because Japan has produced cars and we have produced dried mangoes and pastillas. The Philippines has been so left behind by Asian countries that foreigners shake their heads and ask, “What happened to your country?” Let us not even compare the Philippines with the four Tiger economies, ‘cuz they’re just way way way too far ahead. What about Vietnam and Thailand? I read that for every one Filipino who has a Master’s Degree, Vietnam has 6, Thailand has 25 and Singapore has 200. But why bother to be educated when the national dream is to go abroad? We are scattered from Hongkong to Kazakhstan, from Italy to even North Korea. Thousands of our doctors are becoming nurses. Our teachers become caregivers. Our women become entertainers and prostitutes. Our young people only know one course and that is nursing. Why would foreigners respect us when we do not even respect ourselves? We are the country of Gucci Gangs—our elite own Picassos and they simply have no heart to alleviate and educate the masses, as F. Sionil Jose and Brian Gorrell—the pitiful Australian guy who was robbed by DJ Montano—sadly pointed out. I am reminded of Condoleezza Rice, the first black woman to become the United States Secretary of State. She was born in Alabama and suffered discrimination on account of her color. But she was taught from a young age by her father, that she had to be “twice as good”and prove that she was deserving of advancement. Condoleezza Rice explains, “I was going to be so well prepared, and I was going to do all of these things that were revered in white society SO WELL, that I would be armored somehow from racism. I would be able to confront white society on its own terms.” (Washington Post, Lessons of Might and Right, How Segregation and an Indomitable Family Shaped National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice, By Dale Russakoff, September 9, 2001) The only way to answer people, who insist that we are uncivilized tribes is not by shooting off our mouths. The only answer is to beat them by studying and working ten times harder than the rest—to beat them not just once or twice, but to do so consistently for the next 20,30, 40, 50 years. Unless we Filipinos are prepared to love our country, and sacrifice ourselves by doing the extra-mile, we really deserve to be called stupid. ~ Lipad-Lawin Source: http://www.thebrownraise.org

Most Filipinos I met are very nice peope (but not necessarily sharp/intelligent like the East Asians). Vietnamese in my opinion isn't that smart either. Koreans can be pretty dumb too. Once again, he can be classified as both I guess.

What does it matter? The Philippines is in Asia, therefore if you're Filipino you are Asian. It's pretty simple. Being smart or not has nothing to do with anything.

OK, first of all, expecting Americans to know the least little thing about geography is expecting way too much of them. I'm married to an African, from Ghana. I have encountered hundreds of people who think that Africa is a country, not a continent; several who've asked me if I went on a "safari" when I went to Africa, and whether or not my husband and kids speak "African" (there are 45 major languages in Ghana alone, not even looking at the other 55 countries on the continent). Anyway, the point is, most Americans are going to have a blank "What are you talking about" look when you try to discuss the Philippines. My doctor is from the Philippines. And I've had previous doctors from there. They are good doctors, esp. the one I have now. MY confusion about the Philippines has to do with a sort-of-Asian look to the people, but Spanish sounding names. And Tagalog doesn't seem to be a language like Chinese and Japanese, since it's written with Latin (Roman) characters. So from that perspective, I can see it being considered as a "Pacific Island" country as opposed to being a part of Asia.
